THE HIVES
Veni Vidi Vicious
Burning Heart/Epitaph

· First North American release from Swedish quintet formed in 1993

They sideswipe you right from the start with the energy of The Who in their Shepherd’s Bush days while singing with nuclear passion about atomic weapons, then end up sounding a lot like early Calgary punk scenesters like The Sturgeons or Hot Nasties, right down to the snare-in-a-garage echo. What’s the deal with this slew of Swedish bands that thunder about with the past held firmly against their tongues in their cheeks? Fun and undone, even scrubbing a toilet could seem like a party with this as a soundtrack.
