· New statistics released to coincide with Labour Day show union membership in Canada grew proportionately more than paid employment during the first half of 2000 compared with the same period of 1999, resulting in a rise in the union rate.
According to data from the Labour Force Survey, about 3.7 million paid workers belonged to a union during the first half of 2000, up from 3.6 million during the same period in 1999 Newfoundland remained the most unionized province at 39.2 per cent, and Alberta had the lowest rate at 21.1 per cent.
· Pathway repair projects will close down sections of the North Bow Pathway from the Louise Bridge to the Nose Creek confluence east of the Calgary Zoo between September 5 and November 28. The work will be done in sections and signed detours will route users to the South Bow Pathway via the Louise Bridge (10 St. N.W.), Princes Island Bridge (3 St. N.W.), Langevin Bridge (4 St. N.E.) and Baines Bridge (11 St. N.E.).
Sections will be closed during the following periods: September 5 to 25 Louise Bridge to Princes Island Bridge; September 25 to October 16 Princes Island Bridge to Langevin Bridge; October 16 to November 6 Langevin Bridge to Baines Bridge; and November 6 to 28 Baines Bridge to Nose Creek confluence. Exact dates of closure may vary due to weather conditions and construction scheduling.

· Calgary West MP Rob Anders will be the ridings Canadian Alliance candidate in the next federal election after facing an unsuccessful challenge from Alberta Tory MLA Jocelyn Bergener in a nomination battle last week. Meanwhile, family and human rights lawyer Brian Edy secured the provincial Liberal nomination in Calgary Buffalo. The longtime Liberal stronghold is currently represented by the citys only elected Liberal MLA, Gary Dickson, who is retiring.
