· A leading health care advocate from the U.S. will discuss the repercussions of privatizing health care at a lecture this week entitled Profit from Pain in U.S. Health Care: A Warning for Canada. Dr. David Himmelstein, associate professor at Harvard Medical School and founder of Physicians for a National Health Program, warns that for-profit care is expensive, inefficient and of poor quality.
The lecture, co-sponsored by Parkland Institute, Council of Canadians, Arusha and Friends of Medicare, takes place Tuesday, August 29 at 7:30 p.m. at Libin Lecture Theatre in the Health Sciences Building (adjacent to the Foothills Hospital). Admission is by donation, and pay parking is available. Call 246-8498 for details.
· A 12-hour music and skateboard fund-raiser to support Red Cross Abuse Prevention Services in Southern Alberta will take place Thursday, August 24 at Java Sharks on 17th Avenue S.W.). The event, organized by students Chris Petry and Sally Hutcheon, starts at 2 p.m. with a skateboard demonstration and competition accompanied by DJs Phat Pat, Sahara Rock and Mig 29. The bands start at 7:30 p.m., featuring Belvedere, Run Chico Run, 5 Spot, Lisp, Kid Apprehensive, Guilt Trip, and Life After High School. Donations will be collected, and all ages are welcome until 9 p.m.
· Next week, one of Calgarys theatre landmarks is swinging its doors wide open in order to introduce its tenants to the public. On Wednesday, August 30 between 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., Pumphouse Theatres will host an open house for its 10 resident theatre companies. The event will include information booths for each company, as well a cash bar and snacks.
In order to fulfill its mandate of encouraging and supporting community theatre in Calgary, the Pumphouse is inviting actors, directors, producers, backstage technicians and the general public to attend the free event. For more information call 263-0079.
· Advocates for wilderness protection in Alberta are again joining forces as Alberta Wilderness Association and Campers Village stage the conclusion to the POP (Protect Our Parks) 2000 campaign. On Saturday, August 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Campers Village in South Calgary, people will have an opportunity to voice their opinion on conservation issues and get involved in environmental protection.
