· The 18th annual Calgary River Raft Race is less than a month away, so it’s time for participants to register a team and start building a raft. The race will take place Sunday, August 20 on the Bow River, and the winner will not be determined by who crosses the finish line first, but by how creative and original their raft is.

Registration for the Calgary River Raft Race costs $20 for people over 16 years old, and can be picked up and dropped off at any Lammles Western Wear clothing store in Calgary, the Calgary Area Outdoor Council (1111 Memorial Dr. N.W.), the Fraternal Order of Eagles (9305 5 St. S.E.) or the Canadian Diabetes Association (114 1212 1 St. S.E.). Proceeds from this year’s event will go to the Fraternal Order of Eagles, who will be supporting the Diabetes Association of Alberta and the Tom Baker Cancer Centre. · Drivers who go heavy on the gas pedal when they see yellow may want to ease up. City council approved a plan this week to install red-light cameras at some of the city’s high-traffic intersections. The Calgary Police Service will run the program, which calls for 24 cameras to be rotated between 84 major intersections. The cameras will photograph the license plates of vehicles that enter the intersection after the light has turned red, and tickets will be mailed out to the owners.

· The Kensington Sun and Salsa extravaganza takes place this Sunday, July 30 with salsa dancing, food, music and fun taking place throughout the neighbourhood. The event, held by the Kensington Business Revitalization Zone, is sure to attract large crowds if predictions for sunny weather come true.

· Some great sports legends will be swinging their bats in aid of charity at the Allstars Baseball Benefit on Saturday, July 29 at 2 p.m. at Burns Stadium. The family event will feature Bill "Spaceman" Lee, Danny Cox, Jon Warden, Bert Campaneris, Ron Robinson, Doug Glynn, Ivan Murrell and others, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Firefighters Burn Treatment Society.

· The Alberta Wilderness Association campground blitz crew will stop at the Barrier Lake Visitor Centre in Kananaskis Country on July 29 and 30. The AWA’s summer tour of provincial parks is an effort to raise awareness about issues surrounding parks and protected areas, and to help people ensure they have a voice in the decision-making.

The volunteers will be set up outside the visitor centre from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Petitions will be available for signing and circulating.

· A Calgary Internet company is holding its own Web site hostage in a gimmick to raise money for a local charity. The Complete Home Guide Web site (completehomeguide.com) does not plan to release its front page until it receives $10,000 in donations for Papa Joe’s, also known as the Jesus Loves You Society. The company also promises to donate 15 per cent of their sales during the project to the charity, and staff of the Complete Home Guide will volunteer their time.

The Jesus Loves You Society is based at St. Paul’s Church (240 - 15th Ave. S.W.) and gives out free meals to homeless people.
