· Alberta once again received a failing grade from the World Wildlife Fund for its efforts – or lack of – to protect the environment from development. The organization, which has been releasing environmental report cards since 1989, stated that the Alberta government has failed to deliver on its promise 10 years ago to complete a network of protected areas by 2000 through the Special Places program, and handed the province its third F since the beginning of the campaign.

· Calgary Street Talk released its third anniversary issue this week with a special edition featuring a double cover – a buckin’ bronc on one side, and a pictoral tribute to its dedicated vendors on the other. The issue, timed to coincide with the Stampede, features an interview with Billy K, the voice of the annual rodeo and exhibition. Calgary Street Talk is a non-profit program of the Calgary Urban Project Society (CUPS) that has been providing jobs to people for three years – it’s an alternative to panhandling, and has received an award of excellence from the downtown business association. · Community Natural Foods and its suppliers are putting a healthy twist on the traditional pancake breakfast with the third annual Alternative Stampede Breakfast. The menu will include organic fruit salad with yogurt, wheat- and gluten-free flapjacks, veggie links and strips, beef sausages from holistically raised pastured beef, and organic coffee, tea and juice. The breakfast will be held Friday, July 14 from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the store (1304 (10th Avenue S.W.). Admission is free, however, a donation for the food bank is encouraged.

· Nominations are being accepted for the Black Achievement Awards until Monday, July 31 at 4:30 p.m. The award categories include: scholastic achievement educator; business, community and volunteer services; science and technology, fine and performing arts; health and well-being; sports and recreation; and trades. · The Pathway Hub is hosting a climbing and hiking information day on Saturday, July 15 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., featuring hiking clubs, tour companies, trail care groups, gear, the sport of rock climbing and more. The Hub is located in the old firehall along the Bow River Pathway at the corner of Memorial Drive and 10th Street N.W., and is operated by the Calgary Area Outdoor Council.
