Hold-Up
Fiat Lux/Virgin· More French disco? Mais oui.
Capitalizing on the 4/4 and the "if it comes from France it must be good" crazes, were blessed with another release of disco house courtesy of Virgin.
The lead single "Lucky Star," available for some time on 12-inch, has been chosen as the first single and has definite commercial potential syrupy R&B vocals and spoken word combined with a minimal sterilized house thump. Thankfully, "Lucky Star" is the lowest point on Hold-Up, though not its only flaw.
The remainder of the album hovers over the quagmire between disco house and electrofunk. "Young MC," the albums definite standout track, reaches back to grab a Musical Youth sample "this generation rules the nation" and will probably serve as an anthem for the summer months to come. In fact, separated into singles, the excesses of the entire album know-twiddling, filtering, rapping could be overlooked, but unfortunately, as a whole, Fafa Monteco (the creative helmsman) has created something a little too formulaic which becomes more than apparent by the end of the disc.
