Ah, the moustache. As inextricably linked to rock ’n’ roll as the penis, venereal diseases and dead drummers – the holy trinity of rock, as it were.

Once again, The Night Gallery will celebrate the ’stache, and those who’ve pioneered its use in the music community, with the fourth annual Moustache Rock weekend on Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20. Local bands such as Chixdiggit, Huevos Rancheros, Massive Ferguson, Great Uncle Bull and others will lock mutton chops in two solid (totally) nights of righteous tunes, covering music from hairy dudes such as Skynyrd, The Allman Bros., Foghat, Grand Funk, Boston and Patti Smith.

The winners? Well, of course everyone’s a winner, baby, but the best follicular showing will receive the much-coveted Golden Wah-Wah Pedal. And proceeds from the event also go to support the No Ka Oi Ranch Foundation, a day camp for underprivileged and special needs children.

To get good ’n’ gunned for the event, here are Fast Forward’s picks for the best and worst five facial creations from the annals of rock history:

Five best:

· Burton Cummings

· Jim Croce

· Lemmy

· Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick)

· Ted Nugent

· honourable mention: Herb from Megatunes

Five worst

· Prince

· Paul McCartney

· Dieter Meier (Yello)/ Dave Ball (Soft Cell)

· Dave Stewart

· Freddie Mercury
