Eight local arts organizations are a little better off financially this week following the announcement of the annual du Maurier Arts Council grants.

Alberta Ballet, Alberta Theatre Projects, Calgary Aboriginal Awareness Society, Calgary Opera, Calgary Philharmonic Society, Decidedly Jazz Danceworks, Hispanic Performing Arts Society and One Yellow Rabbit (OYR) were among 258 Canadian arts groups sharing in the $2-million windfall.

For the past 30 years, the du Maurier Arts Council has given out monies totalling $54 million to different segments of the country’s arts community in the form of cash grants, capital funding for venues and support for arts programs.

"As (government) funding decreases, arts organizations are constantly seeking avenues of support," said council member Marg Southern at a press conference last Thursday. "The council is pleased that it is able to assist them in their very ambitious endeavours."

"We feel it’s necessary to look for support from the business community in general," says OYR general manager Steve Schroder, who declined to dislose how much the theatre company received. "And no other company in Canada that I know of is more supportive than du Maurier – I think that that’s great and I think they set a good example for other companies."
