Up for downstroke? The sonic mayhem continues this weekend in what is fast becoming an increasingly beat-friendly city.
Thursday offers you four options to explore. Liquid Audio held in The Warehouse has junglist Cereo, along with Dean Clarke and Dave Reynolds, squaring off in pursuit of musical diversity. Categories featured will include drum n bass, hip hop and rare groove n funk. Doors open at 9 p.m.
The second option is Astro and Pump down at Cherry Lounge, where theyll explore all facets of hip hop. A few doors down from Cherry, the rag tag team of Mike Grimes INC. will play out the good times down at The Night Gallery. In more of a mellow mood? Catch the pleasure of Cruise Control featuring Jonathon on decks and Ravi on trumpet, all happening down at Concorde.
Friday has Nuttin But the Hitz shaking the cosmic tree for 10 hours of bass-friendly delirium. DJs for this are Groof, Five Alive, Destroyeah, Commodore, Double D and a whole bunch more. For information call 230-6030.
Saturday itll be a jungle out there as Rumble in the Jungle sets the city ablaze with CJSWs Lotus Queen taking to the turntables along with Cykosis, Lucas Quinn, Citrus, Slip and Slide and DJ Proph playing their own special blend of drum n bass. If jungle aint your bag, Cold Phusion is the same night. This one features Vinne, Size Small, Emotion, Bazooka Joe, Madam Zu, Mistah Levi, Mark Thomas and Nautigroove. Call 267-9082 for data.
Not enough? Residents Pauly Dee & Anthem will play host down at The Warehouse to the ever-lovin Ariel and Roel. This 2x4 tag team takes place Saturday night/Sunday morning at 3 a.m. and will explore the progressive side of trance.
Tuesday for your dub pleasure, The Night Gallery presents the legendary Mad Professor, who has worked with everyone from Massive Attack through to Sly and Robbie. The same night, up at the university, Mix Master Mike hits Mac Hall for some turntable scientifics. Tickets are available at TicketMaster.
On Wednesday, Ferenheit settles in at Embassy, where this week the DJ du jour will be none other than Deko ze. Doors for this one are at 9 p.m.
Feng Shui takes place the same evening at The Warehouse. Techno gurus Taro and Honeey Mustard will be your guides, while Compound Eye provide visuals. Doors are also at 9 p.m.
Checking out the old DJ Grab Bag to find something that will get you primed for any or all of the above, INCredible and Sony have recently issued a rare groove compilation as selected and mixed by rare groove god Giles Peterson. This is a two-CD compilation that swings from Brazilica to funk and all points in between, showcasing some of the finest rare groove youll find without having to buy a turntable or hiring Dean Clarke to play your party.
Two drum n bass releases of note: DJ Dara, recently released on Moonshine, focuses on the darker side of the jungle; while Goldie, also on INCredible, has chosen to explore the past and present of drum n bass. Both should help you rumble better in this weekends jungle.
