Food is an incredibly important part of Western culture, and compared to many parts of the world our society is obsessed with it. We talk about its nutritional benefits, we devote hours of television time to its preparation, and a wealth of magazines have hit the shelves to dish out a monthly dose of food pornography.
Foodculture: Tasting Identities and Geographies in Art (YYZ Books) examines our cultures obsession with food and how it relates to art. The collection of essays stems from an art exhibition at the ArtLab at the University of Western Ontario and brings together artists, writers and art historians to examine foods sensual and symbolic power and the rituals surrounding its preparation and consumption.
From Kants belief that taste was a "lower sensation" to Peter Greenaways film The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, Foodculture is a delicious examination of how, as they say, we are what we eat.
Eco-friendly shopping on the Internet
One of the recurring questions surrounding Earth Day is how to bring about positive change in the environment. There are lots of ways individuals can contribute to a healthy planet from obvious efforts such as riding a bike to work and using less water, to those that require more commitment like choosing a fuel-efficient car over an SUV or buying wind power. But one of the biggest challenges we face is how to convince big companies to make the same effort. The best way to let them know the importance of practicing conservation and developing environment-friendly products and services is to put your money to work for you.
The EcoLogo is a designation which indicates a product or service is proven to have less of an impact on the environment because of how it is manufactured, consumed or disposed of. To qualify, the company must meet the certification requirements of the Environmental Choice Program, Canadas only national and comprehensive ecolabelling program. The programs Web site includes a list of products and services that have earned the logo from appliances to personal care to electricity.
Use the list for your shopping needs to show those progressive companies you appreciate their efforts, and to let others that have been slower to catch on know that they will be left behind if they dont take action. Consumer power may turn out to be one of the most energy efficient and environmentally friendly intitiatives of the future.
