· The Grand Lougheed received a reprieve from city council this week. On April 17, council accepted the recommendations of the Heritage Advisory Board and the operations and environment committee, voting to ask the province to reconsider its decision regarding the Lougheed Building and Grand Theatre, and to designate the site under the Historical Resources Act, compensating the owners if necessary. Council also directed administration to explore the possibility of purchasing the building, and to report to the land committee by June 2000.

· Friends of Medicare reports that more than 10,000 people sent a clear message to the Alberta government at rallies in Calgary and Edmonton this weekend, chanting "Kill the Bill" and cheering for Shirley Douglas, the daughter of Medicare founder Tommy Douglas, and other speakers.

A new government poll that reportedly shows the majority of Albertans support its health care plan hasn’t dampened the spirits of it opponents – daily protests at the provincial legislature are attracting hundreds of people and a lot of media attention.

· The Alberta Motion Pictures Industries Association (AMPIA) honoured the best from film and television at its annual gala awards evening in Calgary last weekend.

While an Edmonton children’s television series titled Mentors took home the most "Rosies" – nine of 48 – Calgary also fared well. Director John Hazlett’s feature-length film Bad Money won three awards, including best dramatic production over 60 minutes. The locally shot project starring Canadian actor Graham Greene also won for costume design and makeup. Other local winners included: White Iron Productions (three), SAIT (two), Calgary 7 (one), CBC TV (one), and country musician Paul Brandt (one).
