The Distress Centre marked its 30th anniversary last week with the official opening of its new offices on 8th Avenue S.W., which are closer to the LRT and public parking, and are wheelchair accessible.
"The year 2000 marks the 30th year that the Distress Centre has provided crisis services to the City of Calgary, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year," says Barb Litchinsky, executive director, adding that the quality and caring service will continue.
Distress Centre formerly the Distress Centre/Drug Centre also changed its name and updated its image to better reflects the wide range of services it offers.
The not-for-profit community agency provides 24-hour crisis intervention services to the community clients seek help for depression and stress, relationship issues, problem gambling, drug addictions, domestic violence and more. Services are free and confidential, and are provided through crisis telephone lines, professional on-site counselling and public education programs.
Distress Centre currently receives approximately 3,000 calls per month. The centres main crisis phone number, 266-1605, and all other phone numbers remain unchanged.
