HORACE ANDY
Living in the Flood
Melonkolic/Virgin Records

· The reggae legend returns on Massive Attack’s label.

For those looking for Horace Andy to replicate his work with Massive Attack, you’ll be disappointed; for those looking for Andy to return to his roots, you’ll find him in fine form on Living in the Flood. He’s obviously been busy writing and exploring the organics of dub and reggae, here utilizing live instrumentation, a tight horn section, a rock-steady rhythm section and a voice that sounds like it hasn’t aged in his 49 years.

Living in the Flood soothes without the dependency on studio manipulation or production, and has Andy, as always, paying much respect to the Lord and espousing a higher consciousness, the likes of which the musical public hears too little of. But for most of the album (specifically a track like "Doldrums"), Andy says what he has to say without chronic, earnest preaching – conversion comes from the beat and the message just kinda floods in.
