Hooray for spring. At the beginning of March, my excitement started to grow as the spring cleaning began in my home. In reality, that means I am cleaning out my closet to make room for all of the fabulous things I am about to buy. And believe me, there are a lot of purchases to make.

This year, the spring and summer fashions are more diverse than ever. Menswear is giving a strong push to the mid-calf pant, which has been popular with the ladies for a while, and is a welcome addition to a man’s summertime options. Velcro, toggles, hidden buttons and magnets are the added attention to details that set this season apart from the last.

Women’s spring fashions are all over the map. Beaded pants are still around, as are hippie-inspired knee-length flowing skirts and dresses. The cowboy look is also strong – bandanna halters, gingham, suede and leather give you plenty of options, and not just for Stampede. "Girlie" skirts and dresses are back as well, and pairing a very dainty skirt with flip flops and a plain T-shirt is a look you’ll be seeing a lot of.

And let’s not forget about the ’80s look being back in all of its leather and studded glory – men’s and women’s trend-spotters are big on this one.

So, if you hung onto your favourite items of every year from 1975 to now, I guarantee, you’ll be up-to-the-minute chic this season. Here are a few trendy and classic looks that will give you some ideas for the spring and summer.

"Shuttlecock" Sophie has been an environmentalist for as long as she can remember. Growing up in Regina, she had her work cut out for her. Just outside of the city is a "ski hill" made from garbage, but that’s just the beginning. Until our Miss Sophie took matters into her own hands, Regina was importing their tap water from Mexico. In the mid-’80s, she grabbed the bull by the horns, and cleaned up the entire water treatment system, giving clean water to the entire area. Because of this incredible undertaking, Sophie now has the key to the city. Today, you can find Sophie working hard at Caffe Beano or Sunnyside Market.

Sophie’s more casual outfit consists of a black Powerline stretch sleeveless top, Kismet’s own label sarong, and an orange, multi-strand bugle bead bracelet. For an evening fondue party, Sophie selected a denim appliqué Boy meet Girl halter top, and black X;S stretch beaded pants. All of her treasures for the evening are stored in a Kismet sari fabric satchel. (Clothing courtesy Kismet.)

Lorissa has lived the life of three girls in her twentysomething years. As a youngster, she won every beauty pageant around. In her early teens, things started looking very serious for Lorissa’s modeling career. She was in Milan for the prestigious Elite Look of the Year contest and was one of the final two contestants when, in the spirit of Tonya Harding, the other finalist shattered Lorissa’s knees, making her unable to do the crucial "beer turn" needed to win the event. To this day, Lorissa still wonders "What if...," so please don’t ever ask to see those knees. Now she has given up the limelight to look after her two-year-old daughter Paige.

For a casual day of badminton, Lorissa selected a white papery-cotton skirt by Kookai, pink Talula Babaton T-shirt, a dark denim jacket also by Talula, and some black Nine West wedge sandals. To doll things up for the evening, she’s wearing black Lycra pants and a white tube top, both by Talula Babaton. (Clothing and sandals courtesy Aritzia.)

Kurt has always been one of the nicest people I know, but for a long time he had some problems overcoming his shyness. That’s when an amazing course turned his life around. In 1986, Kurt enrolled in Victor Choy’s School for Learning the Art of People Skills. Now Kurt has all of the confidence in the world, and can charm everyone around him, thanks to Victor Choy and his magical ways. Kurt can be found working his fantastic people skills at Bow Cycle.

Kurt’s ready for an afternoon in the sun in a yellow, long-sleeved T-shirt and vibrant floral Hawaiian shorts, both by Hurley. (Clothing courtesy Echo House.) When he was looking for something more glamorous, he slipped into a crisp white cotton short-sleeved shirt by Mexx, and a pair of olive Books’ Menswear pants. (Clothing courtesy Infusion.)

As a small boy in Australia, James knew exactly what he wanted to do for the rest of his life, and that was to be in a Crowded House cover band. Upon meeting childhood pal and fellow music enthusiast KJ Jansen, the young boys set out to take Calgary by (Aussie rock) storm. After years of pursuing this dream with little success, James branched out with his band 1000 Sticks, but can still be persuaded to sing a few bars of "Don’t Dream It’s Over" if you play your cards right. When not playing music, James is putting in a lot of hours working for the Calgary Folk Festival.

For a day on the court, James selected a pair of navy Split shorts and a cotton Quicksilver bamboo short-sleeved shirt. (Clothing courtesy Echo House, footwear supplied by Sol Macadocious.) For a dinner party, James put together a black DEX T-shirt, grey Mexx summer short-sleeved sweater and charcoal grey ribbed Mexx pants. (Clothing courtesy Infusion.)
