BOSS HOG
Whiteout
In the Red Records

· Features production by Andy Gill (Gang of Four), JG Thirlwell (Foetus, Wiseblood), Roli Mosimann, Jim Sclavunos (ex-Sonic Youth, Bad Seeds) and Tore Johansson (Cardigan's producer).

I have never doubted what Jon Spencer was referring to whenever he barked out his slithery tag phrase "Goddamn, let's do it." Until now. Let's do what, Jon – knit?

Although Boss Hogg is clearly the main project of Spencer’s spouse, Cristina Martinez, Jon hoots his frantic JSBX "Woo-ha's" from the rock ’n’ roll pulpit in a mad search to find his niche on this un-edgy album. Instead, he sounds like a misplaced cheerleader shouting over pre-recorded tracks.

A few redeeming songs throw the spotlight on Cristina as a slinky sex kitten on catnip, but between purrs it sounds like she's picked up a dry Sneaker Pimps formula (gasp! – I know). Sterile beats, sleepy tempos and boring programming are lukewarm filler, and definitely not the progressive, high-brow chic you’d expect from this dynamite duo.
