The Weaselhead/Glenmore Park Preservation Society says Calgarians attending public information sessions on the proposed Sarcee Trail extension were surprised to learn it will be more like Deerfoot Trail than a new commuter route. The proposed road is being designed as a six-lane divided highway, with limited access every 1.5 km.
Lisa Richardson, president of the society, says she sympathizes with the southwestern residents traffic concerns, but suggests that Calgarians are entitled to full disclosure of the nature of the proposed highway, prior to the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the city, province and Tsuu Tina Nation.
"I certainly appreciate the frustration the commuters are feeling, but hope that all Calgarians understand that the present proposal is for a major trucking route that could carry dangerous and toxic materials in immediate proximity to established communities and over the watershed of the Glenmore Reservoir," she says.
Several public information sessions have already taken place, and city council is slated to vote on the MOU on April 3.
