The City of Calgary is holding an open house on a draft plan for Discovery Ridge Natural Park, a new parcel of environmentally significant parkland along the Elbow River in East Springbank.
The 230-acre park, between the Tsuu Tina land to the south and the proposed Discovery Ridge residential development to the north will be classified as a Special Protection Natural Environment Park the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary and Weaselhead and the only two other areas in the city that carry this designation.
The proposed management plan includes protection/preservation of the highest quality habitat, and rehabilitation of disturbed areas. Recreational opportunities planned for location in already disturbed areas include a system of designated trails and a limited number of river access/viewing sites.
The parkland will be an important addition to Calgarys river valley urban park system, and work is scheduled to begin this summer.
The open house is being held to gather public feedback on the draft plan, and takes place on Thursday, April 6 at Strathcona Alliance Church (1411 - 69th Street S.W.). The plans will be available for viewing from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., at which time a formal presentation will be made. For more information call Calgary Parks & Recreation at 268-1376.
