CD Review by Mike Bell BLIMEY! Contradictory Nature & the Struggle Within 62 TV Records • A Netherlands musical collective led by Marten Van Bergen. Though ultimately nowhere near as satisfying, Contradictory Nature & the Struggle Within sets itself up – right from the title of the album – on the same plane as Ween’s masterpiece debut, GodWeenSatan: The Oneness. With an unintelligible plan of attack, it weaves from quirky jingle to nightmarish piano thumping to obtuse storytelling, alternately pleasing and unnerving as each track passes. It sounds like it was made by a pop musicologist with a combination of advanced ADD and Tourette’s. Not surprisingly, the end result is something akin to watching a fat guy in the shower: you’re awed by the spectacle of it, but you feel funny for looking. 3/5
