by Carla DalukaI love spring. I love everything about it. I love shedding all of my winter layers, I love exposing my pasty white skin to the harsh UV rays, only to be greeted by a nasty heat rash forcing me to bathe in baking soda from April 1 to May 14. I love it.
This spring the fashion magazines have been letting me down a little bit, however. The whole notion of "hippie chic" absolutely escapes me. I find nothing appealing about $1000-blue jeans with embroidered daisies on them. And the smell of patchouli reminds me only of the fact that not everyone enjoys hygiene quite as much as I do.
I have found solace in the retailers of Calgary knowing their clientelle and knowing not to let the Elle and FHMs of the world dictate their merchandise. Spring has added to my wardrobe things I never even thought possible let the record show, Carla Daluka, being of sound mind and body, has officially embraced pink for the first time in her 20-odd years. My closet now contains some five or so pieces in various shades of my new favourite colour, and I enjoy them all with the passion of a new relationship.
Some of my other spring-time favourites are featured in the accompanying photos. I trust youll embrace them (and me) with all of your might.
David Wyse has the creative mind of a young Kenny Rogers. Several years ago David started the hugely successful KFT (Kentucky Fried Turkey) chain throughout the Greater Victoria area. Everything was going smoothly until young Mr. Wyse stumbled into a Kenny Rogers Roasters. One bite into a Stuffin Muffin and he was in love. He sold all rights to the KFT franchise and moved to Calgary. Today, David is fully recovered from his addiction he can be found creating furniture on his own, or trying to recreate the magic of his famous turkey dinners in the kitchen of the River Café.
For his casual look, David selected some navy Fresh Jive shorts and a Volcom Hawaiian shirt. His Etnies flip flops and Arnette sunglasses make David look ready for summer. (Courtesty of The Source.)
For evening, David chose a white painted patch-pocket jacket and trousers. White on white is a great look for spring, so this outfit was completed with a white cotton-mercerise dress shirt all by Ann Demeulemeester. (Courtesty of Fritz Lang.)
Mel Joness life changed with the viewing of one simple television program Fame. When Jimmy Osmond appeared on the show singing "Penny Lane," she realized he was the most talented Osmond, and moved to Utah to pursue her destiny as Mrs. Jimmy Osmond. However, the Mormon lifestyle proved to be too restrictive for Mel, so after several years with Jimmy, she packed her bags and moved back to Calgary. She recently completed her dance degree at the U of C and says she owes it all to the Osmond inspiration. Heres to you, Jimmy.
For her casual look, Mel is wearing one of my favourite things, a bandana inspired by both the love of Axl Rose and Scott Baio. She is also sporting a navy Volcom mini skirt, and white Westbeach tank. Etnies slides and Arnette sunglasses punch things up a notch or two. (Courtesy of The Source.)
Mel adopts a simple yet glamourous look for evening in an amazing wrap-around dress by Ann Demeulemeester. (Courtesty of Fritz Lang.)
Koreen Peck probably looks familiar to you. Thats because she was Junior Miss Canada Post, a title she held for an unprecedented four years. Upon handing down her crown, she opened the ever popular Nellies on Fourth Street.
For her casual look, Koreen wears a silver active-wear skirt with matching three-quarter sleeve scoop neck T-shirt. Her rose-coloured, hooded zip-front cardigan and freshwater pink pearls are tugging at my gentle pink heart strings. (Courtesy of Robin Kay Home and Style.)
For evening, Koreens dark grey skirt and basic black twin set (cardigan not shown) are great for a casual comfortable night out. (Courtesy of Robin Kay Home and Style.)
Sebastian Youn has been in the spotlight from an early age. The Las Vegas production of Up With People merged with the lesser known Nudes on Ice for the most elaborate stage show Nevada has ever seen. With all of his earnings from this three-year run, Sebastian opened the Sebastian Youn Gallery. With a nod to his past, Mr. Youn shows both contemporary art and sequined costumes from his days as a showgirl.
For a casual daytime look, Sebastian selected a PUSCH black polyester shirt and stone Iceberg jeans. (Courtesty of Toxic.)
For evening, Sebastian felt right at home in this navy Paul Smith three-button check suit and Dries Van Noten lavender cotton shirt. His tie is a navy multi-square print by Gene Meyer. (Courtesty of Fritz Lang.)
Hair by Lori Thorleifson and make-up by Tristyn Feist, both from Kosmetikos.
