The zine scene

• Squidmail magazine is a unique look at indie culture from a day-in-the-life perspective. Run by ne’er-do-wells Joel Jackson and Eric Skilling of Calgary, Squidmail looks alternative culture in the face and smugly says, "Ha! We’re cooler than that!" With a cast of offbeat volunteer writers, they bring you cynical comedy with a down-to-earth feel. And with their patented chaotic layout, Squidmail is as much eye candy as it is a good read. Backed by something they call Fraud Culture, the crew of Squidmail gives tips on how to have class without cash. They look at the trends du jour and deconstruct them, while injecting their own undebatable hip. Squidmail includes articles, editorials and fiction and reviews like you’ve never seen before. You can find it at Books & Books, Sloth Records, With the Times, Melodiya Records, Shakespeare’s Shelf, or I’ve Read That.

• This is a must for all of those involved in the making or creating of zines. With over 200 listings of zine distributors from around the planet, The Whizzbanger Guide can help introduce your publication to the world. I really like what they have put together, and have not seen anything in comparison to this concept. But one does have to wonder about the accuracy and how valid the updates tend to be. If you distribute zines, drop The Whizzbanger a self-description of what you do along with a U.S. dollar to be included in their next issue.

Revenge on the Web

With April Fool’s Day upon us, you may be looking for a good practical joke to play on friends or loved ones: setting their alarm clocks ahead an hour, Vaseline on the toilet seat – y’know, innocuous stuff like that.

Well that’s all well and good, but what if you not only want to mess with someone’s head, but screw up his or her entire life?

Thank God for The Avenger’s page on the Web. Everything the hardcore joker needs to know is here, from how to deal with racist landlords (sign them up with NAMBLA), to things to do with shit. The Avenger also offers countless ideas on how to ruin the life of a 7-Eleven employee!

What you’ll need (psst, Visine is a great laxative), how to ensure you don’t get caught (as well as disclaimers if you do), and where to go for more vicious dirty tricks can all be found at:
