A weekend full of able turntable action

No matter what day this paper comes out, there’s no foolin’ about one thing: this week is going to be one of the best to get out and see some top-notch talent at the decks. It all starts tonight at the Embassy with FBI’s Most Wanted Part II, the second annual night of "criminally insane house music and breaks." This year’s lineup is the same as last year’s, so you should have no problem pointing out the alleged perpetrators including one of Calgary’s grandfathers of house, DJ Rice, the don of dance Domenic G, the funky and euphoric Pat Sojka, and Mr. Entertainment, Vancouver’s DJ Czech. Last year’s was a sell-out crowd and they’ll probably receive the same sentence this year, so show up early.

Another show that should sell out if this city has any sense is DJ Cash Money at The Republik on the next night. This cat is one of hip hop’s true originators who’s still schoolin’ the kids on scratchin’ at the same time he rocks the house. In fact, one of the world’s best turntablists, the X-ecutioners’ Rob Swift (who has just released The Ablist, a tight new album of turntablism on Aspodel Records), names him as one of three major influences alongside Grandmaster DXT – the guy on Herbie Hancock’s "Rockit" – and Steve D, the inventor of beat juggling. If you love hip hop at all, this is one gig you just can’t miss. Just make sure you come ready to dance because Cash cold knows how to keep the crowd movin’.

The crowd’ll definitely be movin’ down at Sweet Sweet Sugar on Saturday night, finishing off a left-right-left combo of some of the most diverse dancefloor styles that this city has seen in one weekend. Headlined by T.O’s top happy hardcore DJ, Frisky, Candy Flip Production’s party is at the high-energy end of the spectrum with lots of trance, techno and some live PAs. The popular Grooverobber is coming from Vancouver, and Dr. J is making it in from Regina, but the rest of the lineup (including the live acts) are all from Calgary, making this a good barometer for the local scene. Besides, they’re givin’ away free candy! For more info call 571-3392 or visit www.purerave.com/~candy.
