With St. Paddys day just around the corner, try to remember that Ireland is famous for more than Guinness and leprauchans the country has also earned a reputation for its fine literary talent.
The annual Phoenix series is a collection of what the editor considers to be the best unpublished short stories available at the moment.
The third and most recent anthology, Phoenix Irish Short Stories 1998, includes 16 new works from established writers as well as newcomers.
"The Irish short story has always charted the course of the bloodstream in the veins of Irish history, especially Irish social history," says editor David Marcus.
That leaves you to figure out what it means for Ireland that, by coincidence, this years collection has two recurring themes sex and death.
Y2Y hike on the Web
As the Yellowstone to Yukon hike resumes this month, find out more about the inspiration behind the conservation initiative.
Nakoda, a female wolf, roamed over 100,000 square kilometres between June 1991 and December 1995, crossing several times between three U.S. states and two Canadian province. Now considered a wilderness icon, Nakodas incredible travels drove home the point that our current protected areas arent large enough to protect wide ranging species such as wolves and grizzlies.
The 3,400-kilometre hike is being led by Karsten Heuer, a Banff park warden and wildlife biologist, in support of the effort to link key wildlife movement areas through protected corridors.
Find out more about the route, the hikers, the various organizations supporting the cause, and the initiative itself on the Web.
