by FFWD StaffSpring is almost here and, in a logic that parallels supermarket holiday theme decor, record companies are already worried about what music youre going to drive to, party to, patio to and, most of all, buy this summer. Thats why starting about now they begin their biggest onslaught of releases outside of Xmas in order to see what they want to really push in a couple of months. Get ready for lots of new stuff to hit the shelves and just as much hype.
The hype around Phillipe Zdar and BoomBasss (think Motorbass, La Funk Mob, Super Discount) Cassius projects new release, 1999 (Virgin) is considerable. But then again, so is the talent behind it. Virgin Records seems to have a lock on Gallic groovemeisters what with them distributing most of the Yellow Records gangs gems and the tradition continues here. Electrofunksoulhousepsychedelia for the end of the century psyche. Pick it up so come summer youll have chance to say "Cassius? Oh yeah, Ive been listening to that album for ages!"
Also at the height of hype right now, thanks to Fatboy Slim and his ilk, is breakbeat and this week is going to provide a plethora of it for all the local fly b-boys and girls out there, starting with Thursday. As usual you have Taro at the Night Gallery and Dave Reynolds and M & Emes at Orbit, wholl be featuring a special downtempo set by the infamous DJ Czech.
Speaking of downtempo, Spun-G host of CJSWs Translucent Dreams on Sunday nights spins at The Mercury and theres sure to be some kind of breakbeats at the Embassy what with Donald Glaude from Seattle playing with Phunk and Pat Sojka.
The harder side of breakbeat busts out on Saturday night at Passion Episode One, with GI Jodys acid breakbeat and Karizmas hard-steppin jungle battling it out with funky techno and house styles from headliners Deko-Ze and Lori the Hi Fi Princess. Definitely the party to be at on the weekend.
If you still want to hear the best in breaks when you wake up on Sunday or if something a little more mellow is your style, shuffle on down to the Embassy and shell out the three bones for Funkjazztical Waxploitation. DJs Special K and dead air will be spinnin tunes exclusively from the Ninja Tunes stable of artists for a special label spotlight night. And theyre givin away stuff, too!
