by FFWD StaffTake a deep breath: there, that's inspiration. Hold onto it, make a wish before you expire. Then breathe your wish out into the world. It's something kids do, and poets, too.
See it happen when poet Richard Harrison launches his new book of poems entitled Big Breath of a Wish, on Thursday, February 25 at Memorial Park Library. Harrison showed up here in '95 as writer-in-residence at the U of C, and he liked it so much, he bought the company. Well, not precisely. He did stay in the city, though, coming to rest at Mount Royal College, where he teaches, and sometimes even imports whole classrooms full of students into local literary events. The reading's part of the Authors Out Loud series, it's at 7:30 p.m. and the library's at 1221 - 2nd Street N.W. Get there early, it'll be a full house.
The next day, Hilary Clark reads from her debut volume of verse entitled More Light. (That's what they pray for all winter in gloomy overcast Toronto if you move to blue-sky Calgary, presto, you get your wish.) Friday, February 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Pages.
Brief New Works is part of ATP's PanCanadian playRites festival. In brief, it involves actors (not in briefs) reading short works (new) from Canadian playwrights. This year, Chapters in Shawnessy is hosting five Thursday evening readings, from February 25 to March 25, at 7:30 p.m. For information call 201-5660.
Performance poet and playwright Nancy Jo Cullen will be reading from her work Wednesday, February 24 at 7 p.m. at the Alberta College of Art and Design (Annex C). Cullen is a co-founder of Maenad Theatre and author of the play Another Saturday Night and co-author of the play Aphra. This is a Canada Council-sponsored event and everyone is welcome.
