| LETTER Re: Brian Buchanan, cover story (June 18 issue) I've been playing jazz and other forms of music in Calgary since 1980. There has always been ample opportunity and I've been blessed with connections to some of the finest musicians in the country. I'm familiar with all the personalities mentioned in the June 18 cover story, and I'm quite surprised at the way the story reads. When I arrived here I was greeted with open arms and, more importantly, enough gigs to get by. I've never had a problem. I think more than marketing myself and trying to make things happen, it's important to practice and listen on a daily basis as well as show up on time and pay everyone on time. My habits have kept me in the scene and I'm grateful to everyone who has helped me do that, including Brian Buchanan and Eric Friedenberg. Calgary has a great music scene - there is no doubt it will get better and better. John Hyde, |
