by FFWD StaffRe: recent billboard advertising
I wish to express my deep disappointment with one of the new advertisements for your publication. I am speaking of the ad featuring a man's forearm and clenched fist upon which are several night club stamps, a woman's phone number and a cut on the knuckle of the fist. The ad states "arm yourself" and appears to imply that violence is hip, that it'll help you pick up women and that going to a bunch of clubs and getting into a fight is all part of the scene.
I was walking home from work on 8th Street SW today and there, towering above me, was your violence-promoting ad. I felt sick of romanticizing violence set by Tarantino and other people who sell their products with shock tactics. I'm surprised you didn't jab a heroin syringe and needle into the arm for extra effect.
The facts are that violence is far from glamorous. Perpetrators of violence - whether it be domestic violence or violence in the community - tend to be unhappy people who have either experienced or witnessed violence during childhood. Many abuse alcohol to numb their pain. Their victims are people who experience pain and sadness in response to being hit.
I see Fast Forward as a vibrant source of information and commentary about life and events in the Calgary community. As a member of our community, instead of promoting destructive images through your ads, please present something that is worthy of our gaze.
Wendy White,
Calgary
