| BOOKENDS In November 1992, writer Rudy Wiebe received a letter from Yvonne Johnson, an inmate at the Prison for Women in Kingston, Ontario who had read his book The Temptations of Big Bear. Wiebe spent the next few years researching Johnson's life, including five years of talking to her personally, travelling to various places, interviewing people, reviewing court documents, and more. The result is Stolen Life: The Journey of a Cree Woman, written by Wiebe and Johnson. The book tells the true story of Johnson, the great-great-granddaughter of Big Bear who was imprisoned for first-degree murder in 1991. Wiebe will read from this powerful new book on Tuesday, June 23 at 7:30 p.m. at Pages Books on Kensington (1135 Kensington Road NW). Bob's Books (912 - 16 Avenue NW) presents Calgarian Janet Sisson on Myth-Understanding Poetry at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 20. The afternoon event will include original poetry and prose: stories and reflection on everyday life, myth and philosophy. On the topic of philosophy, the store's regular Philosophy Cafe will continue throughout the summer on Thursday evenings including July 9 and 23, and August 6 and 20 at 7:30 p.m. Another Calgarian, Fred Stenson, will read from his works, including Teeth, and Working Without a Laugh Track, on Monday, June 22 at 7:30 p.m. at Chapters McLeod Trail. The reading is one of several held at Chapters stores in June as part of Coteau Books Month. Chapters in Westhills Towne Centre is celebrating its first anniversary Saturday, June 20 with cake and special events throught the day. Best-selling author Peter Urs Bender will discuss how to bring out your top potential in the workforce at 1 p.m., and volunteers from the Calgary Science Network will demonstrate some of the experiments in the Calgary Science Fun Guide, designed for kids, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. (If you have information for Bookends, please fax Fast Forward at 244-1431) |
