Come-Ons, Comebacks, and Kiss-Offs

If you find yourself at a loss for words when you run into the guy who said he'd call and never did, steal a line from Come-Ons, Comebacks, and Kiss-Offs (St. Martin's Griffin). "Oh, hi! I am so embarrassed - I had such a good time the other night, but I cannot for the life of me remember your name." Or, "Well, hello there. I thought you were dead. Wishful thinking, I guess."

However, if the guy does call and the initial dating process is successful, you may be ready for a little action. Martinet suggests letting him know by sending a sexual signal, such as "They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach, but how do I get to the other parts?" Or, "Do you have any interest in seeing my favorite freckle?"

Jeanne Martinet - author of The Art of Mingling, The Faux Pas Survival Guide, and Getting Beyond Hello - has written a survival guide for handling every possible dating predicament - from perfecting the pickup to the mid-date escape, from expediting the first kiss to avoiding it, from awkward dinner conversations to handling rejection, from dumping him nicely to getting even.

On the Surface of Things

On the Surface of Things: Images of the Extraordinary in Science (Chronicle Books), by Felice Frankel and George M. Whitesides, takes the reader inside everyday objects to illustrate the beauty within - tubular gels illuminated by ultra-violet light glow red, green and blue; a rainbow appears in a drop of oil; an opal is magnified to reveal the web of veins; electrons dance on the head of a pin, ice crystals gather on the surface of a window.

The book, a rare collaboration between artist and scientist, explores the hidden visual splendor of scientific phenomena. Complete with full-color photos and accompanying explanations, On the Surface of Things looks at light, form, order, change, disorder and illusion.

Web watch

Before heading out to the movies this weekend, check out The Fall Movie Guide on the Web. The site includes features, reviews, fluff, etc. on all the current flicks. Find out what director Paul Thomas Anderson has to say about Boogie Nights, the porn industry, his influences, etc. Or check out the review of One Night Stand, from the maker of Leaving Las Vegas, before spending your money to see it.

For a lighter look at the entertainment industry, visit Hollywood Underground. The award-winning site includes a behind-the-screens look at Hollywood and the movies - satirical news, information and gossip about everyone and everything. For example, read about Roomies at Rehab, with "Muscles from Brussels" Jean-Claude Van Damme and "Fucked-up Hair from Bel Air" Robert "Downer" Jr. as roommates in a $1,000-a-day rehab centre; find out why Michael Jackson married Barbie; join the No Friends of Friends club; and find out who is the Moron of the Week.

If you have an idea for a movie that should be made, send it to Movies I'd Like to See. The site, a sarcastic stab at the "cookie-cutter movie industry," includes a list and description of movies that should be made, such as Sling Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford as a "retarded" private investigator who groans a lot; Golden Showgirls - Bond is back, and he's naked; or Courage Underwater, with Charlie Sheen as an ex-navy seal who investigates the post-mortem medal potential of a life guard.
