The Quiet Room
Directed by Rolf De Heer
Starring Chloe Ferguson, Celine O'Leary and Paul Blackwell
A young girl narrates the way through her feelings, thoughts, memories and reasons for not speaking out loud in this incredibly unique film. What is haunting about her dialogue and performance is that you comprehend her silence and become frustrated with those in the film who don't. There is a darkness in witnessing this child rationalize her lack of audibility, but Ferguson is so amazing that any discomfort is replaced with reminiscent awe.
Directed by Mick Jackson
Starring Tommy Lee Jones, Anne Heche and Gaby Hoffman
There is a man who works for the city; there is a spunky yet beautiful scientist who nobody will believe; there is mutual attraction between the two; there is an earthquake, as well as explosions of sulphur and ash; there are natural springs that come to a boil; there are children and a dog who survive; there is the bad guy who dies; there is even a co-star with the last name Hoffman. The only difference between Volcano and this year's other volcano movie is more action - and the corniest last line ever.
On the foreign language front, two films enjoying release this week include the French-Canadian J'En Suis (Heads or Tales) directed by Claude Fournier, which finds a talented yet bankrupt architect questioning his sexuality when he plays gay in order to get a job with an antique dealer. In the tradition of Maybe... Maybe Not, this film offers an expected brand of comedy that is actually charming. Even though the characters are overdone and the action is sometimes reduced to silliness, this gender bender entertains. Thieves, from Andre Techine - also in french - stars Catherine Deneuve as a professor who falls for a thief, thus drawing a love triangle with a thrilling edge. Through flashbacks that offer pieces of information, a mystery of sorts is presented and solved. With a hint of Egoyan style, you may also enjoy Ma Saison Preferee from the same director using the same cast.
