BookendsThe Women's Arts Initiative Society of Calgary invites submissions for a women's literature publication on the theme "women reaching beyond." Reaching beyond what? Beyond mere cultural survival. Fifty years ago, says the society, women had to struggle simply to validate their own existence and experience in our culture. "A state of non-existence" was the socially accepted status for women. Times having allegedly changed, some women can now explore "beyond the usual choices." Along with submissions of fiction, non-fiction and poetic reflection, women musicians and singers are also sought for a planned CD to accompany the publication. Writers, send your work before October 15 to The Women's Arts Initiative Society of Calgary, Box 52236, Calgary, T2E 8K9. Volunteers to help with directing and producing the anthology are also welcome, call Suzanne Robert at 293-7469. Or, leave a message with your address or fax number if you would like to receive further details.
The Centre Gallery also invites submissions from women writers who would like to read their work in the context of an art exhibit entitled Women Listen. What do women hear when they listen to the world around them, a cultural world in which they exist as social constructions? A series of individual responses to this question should provide "a pointillist view of women's awareness of their positions in society." Guest curator Anne Severson will present the work of six women artists on this theme, from September 2 to October 10. On September 18 at 7:30 p.m. women writers will read from their work in the gallery. So far there has been such a positive response to the idea of bringing literature together with art that a second evening of readings may be planned. The Centre Gallery is at 924 6th Avenue SW, 2nd floor. Call 237-0383 or 243-4615 for details.
