They got the incorporation papers just last week, but already One Tree Many Leaves is preparing for its second live performance - this time in the cozy subterranean chamber of the Mission Bridge.
Scheduled for the evening are local musicians Paul Forrest with Gypsy Moth, Riddler's Reason, Lori Stuijfzand, Cindy O'Neil, Paul Sinkleman and Jenny Allen. All of them will be playing original music.
"It's a pretty eclectic mix," says O'Neil. "I do funky, bluesy, jazzy stuff. And there'll also be everything from folksy music to rock."
Joining the musicians in the space is the visual work of artists Maureen McCracken and Neil Golden - prints and sculptures respectively. It's an original idea and one the guild tried out successfully in June at Morgan's Pub.
The brainchild of musician Paul Forrest, One Tree Many Leaves has snowballed, outgrowing its modest meeting space in Forrest's home. Now the guild is out to put itself on the map in Calgary's performance scene.
"The concept behind the guild is for local artists to help each other and to collaborate," explains O'Neil. "Being a musician is really hard if you're out there alone. It's really nice to join a community and know that there are people who are trying to accomplish the same thing."
Part of the funds raised by the Mission at the Mission Bridge will be used to support three Calgary organizations - the Interfaith Food Bank, the Calgary Women's Shelter, and CKUA radio.
"The guild came together with the common denominator of wanting to support original art and music in the city," says O'Neil, "but also wanting to support (these) organizations. There are so many charities out there, so it was a difficult decision."
