LETTER

I am writing this note in response to Cassandra Unger and her article about Women's Night Out (March 6, 1997 issue). I read this quote by Jess-Ka Babe: "The Sun, The Herald and Calgary 7 did not get back to me...." I found this to be very upsetting. Why is our local media so uninterested in local musicians?

1) Is it because it is cheaper and more "profitable" to fill the paper with news off the wire about Hollywood-style events from afar? (I mean why would anyone be interested in Women's Night Out when we could maybe find out about some new facet of the O.J. Simpson case or Liz Taylor's brain tumor.)

2) Is it because our own culture and musicians are boring and have nothing worthwhile to offer? That would explain why Jann and kd had to be discovered by the rest of the world before our local sycophants would take notice.

3) Is it because a lot of local reporters and editors just don't show up for work? Maybe our local musicians should take a lesson from the local media - show up to the gig with a radio, let it play the music and then collect from the club owner at the end of the night.

It is time for people around here to stand up and support local artists before the short-sighted media moguls make this into a cultural wasteland.
