Mary Jane Lamond - Suas e! (A&M): The Gaelic tradition is kept alive by Lamond for 50 minutes. She offers a soothing interpretation of traditional songs known to the Cape Breton community for years. Impressively, her voice is able to create a full landscape for songs without instrumentation. Ashley MacIsaac fans will be pleased with his fiddlin' contribution. 3/5 (AM)Powerman 5000 - Mega!! Kung Fu Radio (Dreamworks): Tease your hair, mount the boombox on your shoulder and take a walk to the nearest strip mall to intimidate the 10 year-old Slurpee totin' passerbys. Mega!! is almost catchy (despite harsh vocals) and sounds like the Red Hot Chili Peppers go metal... or mental 'cause this would have been the mistake of their career instead of just marking the end of a short one for Powerman 5000. 2/5 (AM)
Red Red Meat - There's A Star Above the Manger Tonight (Sub Pop): Bloozy, experi(enced)mental rock that takes the Jon Spencer sound and slows it down to resemble the lazy noodlings of Pod era Ween. Too stoned to be sexy, the thudding repetitious river-dragging rhythms hide some fairly cool songs. Highly recommended for those with a wasted and spent attention span... or something. 4/5 (MB)
Redd Kross - Show World (Mercury): A straight ahead rock record from the McDonald brothers. Clever lyrics, however, are disguised by a heavy layer of lethargy. Redd Kross' ongoing battle between sugar-coated melodies and chunky three chord rock takes a turn towards the latter. 2/5 (IC)
