Be Kind, Please Rewind
By Jane McCulloughLumiere and Company
Various DirectorsIn celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Lumiere camera, 40 of the world's best film directors strut their stuff with only a minute of film using the original model of the camera. Interviews and behind-the-scenes clips are interesting, but kept to a minimum, letting the short "movies" tell it all. Highlights include those from John Boorman, David Lynch, Spike Lee and Peter Greenaway.
Last Man Standing
Directed by Walter Hill
Starring Bruce Willis, Christopher Walken and Bruce DernTwo feuding gangs in a war of the streets; enter mysterious stranger. It's a pretty good action film and it's got great style, but it's the original story that gives it credibility. Renowned filmmaker Akira Kurosawa provides the basis for this movie with his film Yojimbo, so if Last Man Standing is unavailable, try the original.
2 Days in the Valley
Directed by John Herzfeld
Starring Danny Aiello, Teri Hatcher, Eric Stoltz, James Spader and Jeff DanielsThe first part of the preview looked so good with all the quick edits and the sound of the second hand absorbing that crucial time. But then it goes quirky and I don't think it ever comes back. The cast is strong and they'll provide a couple of laughs and a few thrills, but with selling points like "the spandex catfight of the year!" (I was unaware there was more than one), this crime caper is mediocre.
Leprechaun 4: In Space
Starring the Tool Time Girl and Rebekah Carlton of TV's BaywatchIf you like crappy horror flicks.... One great thing about this movie is its lack of pretension and its abundance of parody. Take every single film shot in or about space and add a little Irish man with green eyes and a vengeance. It's pure shlock, but if you can appreciate garbage like Bulletproof (which also came out this week) you're not far off.
