Searching for justice
By Nick DevlinJury (joo're): A number of men and women... sworn to declare the truth upon the evidence laid before them.
- Black's Law Dictionary
The truth is that people will always believe what they want to believe.
The truth is that the word "guilty" would have burned Los Angeles to the ground. The word "liable" didn't. And they say semantics don't matter.
The truth is that O.J.'s white jury made up their minds just as fast as his black one. They just had the decency to pretend for a little longer.
The truth is that black people don't like finding other black people guilty any more than white people like believing that black people might be innocent.
It is an ugly truth.
The truth is that the jury wasn't asked the only interesting question in this whole damn trial: were those Bruno Magli loafers really "ugly assed shoes?"
The truth is that Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman are still dead and O.J. is still golfing.
The truth is that "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again" might be a fine motto for a peewee hockey team, but it's a lousy way to run a legal system. "I'll take double jeopardy for a thousand, Alex."
The truth is only good as your lawyer.
The truth is that Danny Petrocelli isn't nearly as cute as Marsha Clark. He's not sleeping with Chris Darden either. Does that mean he might skip the lecture tour and stick to practising law?
The truth is worth $33.5 million. Not counting book deals.
The truth is that O.J. is the brokest millionaire on earth. You gotta love those accountants.
Fred Goldman has offered O.J. all the money if he'll just admit the truth.
The truth is that I killed Ron and Nicole. Really. Honest. I'll even sign my name to it. Can I have my money now?
The truth is that if Fred Goldman really wanted justice served, he should just have had O.J. whacked. Run down by a white Bronco, maybe.
The truth is that there's just not enough poetic justice these days.
The truth is that no justice system can function when it has been reduced to a contest of tit-for-tat between the solitudes of the society it is supposed to protect.
The truth is that Rodney King took O.J.'s punishment.
The truth is that America is still going to hell.
The truth is stranger than fiction. It also makes better television.
The truth is that this is the last thing you'll ever have to read about O.J.
The truth is still for sale.
Any takers?
